Men and women’s intramural basketball wound down last week, but that didn’t make the games any less exciting.
A total of two championship games were played, with a three point shooting competition separating the two contests.
The first game of the night was a hard-fought game for the women. The contest was between Volleyball and Lebrontourage.
Volleyball won the tip off, but Lebrontourage scored the first 3 points in the game.
Lebrontourage had a total of six eligible players for the game, while Volleyball’s squad was 13 members deep.
The half ended 25-16, with Lebrontourage holding the a steady lead.

Sophomore Erika Gray said, “We were all kind of tired [at halftime], and the Volleyball team had a full bench, but we just tried to push through it.”
Fatigue ended up being a big issue for Lebrontourage in the second half.
During quick substitution breaks for Volleyball, Lebrontourage could be seen hunched over looking to find an even breath.
Volleyball was eventually able to pull away with with a 40-33 win over Lebrontourage.
Lily Dawson, a member of Volleyball, said, “It’s great to be able to still play a sport you love at a competitive level, and winning a championship makes everything better.”
Before the next game, several student partook in a 3-point shooting competition.
Beau Donovan, a junior, won for the men, making nine baskets in the two minutes allotted.
“I’ve been playing with my team [the Blue Shells] all season, so that helped, and I always shoot around with my friends,” Donovan said.
This was his first time entering the competition, making it his first win.

For the women, Amber Curran made a total of seven baskets, giving her a heavy lead among the other female contenders.
Nick D’Amato, the coordinator of Intramural Sports, said that the point of these games is to have fun, but it is nice to see healthy competition as well.
“I get to be part of something that kids really enjoy; coming out here and playing intramurals,” D’Amato said.
The next game was the Men’s Intramural Basketball Championships, featuring the Owls and BL Ballers.
This game was a bit more aggressive than the one previous played that night, but it was still a somewhat friendly competition.
The Owls led at halftime 21-19.
The Owls had a full bench, much like Volleyball, while BL Ballers had just one substitute and were able to pull out the win.
Owls Team Member Dayne Mizzi said, “I have been waiting four years to finally win a championship and we did it tonight.”
Intramurals give students a chance to get involved with a sport that they may not otherwise be able to play.
“It’s great to be able to play with all of your friends,” Dawson said.
Intramural sports will continue into the spring, with some of the most popular sports yet to come.
“We have volleyball next, which is one of our biggest, and those signups are open right now,” D’Amato said.
